Scrabble

Have you ever gotten that feeling where you are really, really......I don't know, like, excited or something? Like you really want to do something to help or make things better? You're all pumped up to save the world or bring water to Africa or cure cancer. It's like this ethereal anticipation and you know that good's gonna happen and that you're gonna make it happen. And then you look around your room and can hear your mother's voice in your head: "Oh, sure, you'll save the world from global warming but you won't pick up your dirty socks? You can't be a philanthropist if you don't have clean socks to wear, it's not hygienic!"

Olympic Fever

Conversation with A.P. while she is sitting upside down on the couch(legs on back of couch, head off seat)-
Rosa: What are you doing?
A.P.: Training for the Olympics. I'm a gymnast.
Rosa: (snort)You can't be a gymnast, you're not short.
A.P.: Fine. I'll be a swimmer.
Rosa: Your shoulders aren't wide enough.
A.P.: How about track?
Rosa(being totally racist): Hate to break it to you, but your'e not black.......I know you'll be an equestrian!
A.P.: (grins) That'll work.

Heavy Stuff

This is how deep theological talks with my brother usually go:
Brother (looking at night sky while on walk with sister and father): I wish we could see the stars up close.
H.R.: Mmm.
Brother: I bet we will in heaven.
H.R.: What?
Brother:You know, in heaven we'll be able to see the stars up close. I mean, come on, it's heaven.
H.R.: (laughs)
Brother: (sigh) It'll be pretty awesome.

Is That An Eggplant Or Your Foot?

I, in true Rosalinda fashion, have sprained my ankle. I was playing softball in gym and was on first. Someone hit a grounder right towards the short-stop. Shoot, I thought. I'll never make it. But I had to run, my teammate had to get on first. So I ran. The short-stop threw it to the second baseman and the second baseman- didn't catch it. It hit the ground and rolled straight towards me. I jumped up to get over it and.......landed on it. I swear I heard crunches and pops. But I was safe And so I'm sitting at home, listening to Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight", tying Turk's Heads and  Good Luck knots. And I'm missing our last track meets. Not like I want to run when my ankle's as big around as my two fists put together and has a nice, deep, dark purple/green line under the swelling. But I really want to run. But for now I can just admire the ever-deepening hue of my ankle.

This is Going To Hurt

We came back to track practice today from a weekend, which is always tough, but today my hip was bothering me, which made it worse. I went in to the locker rooms, changed, and came into the gym to stretch and warm-up. Our coaches came in and our head coach reminded us all to turn in our uniforms. A few of us went to get them and hand them in. After a few more announcements, she stood up and told us all that we had work extra hard today to make up for the weekend. I winced as I got up and thought This is going to hurt. And you know what? It did. But it was a good hurt.

Track is Fun!

Three days ago, on Thursday, A.P. and I had a track meet. Our coach told us it was going to be cold and rainy, so we should dress appropriately. Cold and rainy: understatement of the century. It was freezing. When it was time for my 100 meter, I couldn't feel my hands. And rainy doesn't even begin to describe it. About halfway through there was hail. Pea-sized hail, but hail nonetheless. My feet were soaked, my hair was sopping, and I couldn't feel my fingers. People were huddled three to a blanket, not really caring who the other two people were as long as they had a pulse. It was canceled right after the 800m relay. Looking back now, it was really fun.

Killer Kitty

I am sitting, frozen with fear, in front of the computer desk, hoping the kitty in my lap doesn't wake up. He jumped up on my lap while I was doing my homework and got all..........affectionate. I have some nice air flow going through my jeans now. He fell asleep but now I'm moving around on pins and needles so I don't wake up Loverboy here. Oh no. He's waking up.......

S.N.A.G.

Good Morning, America! Well, not really. Miss American Pie is still in bed, but I got up bright and early to tell you all how excited I am! I'm not quite sure why I'm excited, maybe it's because I knit my first S.N.A.G.(She Needs A Gentleman)rose. I'm planning on leaving a multitude of them all over town with a tag saying: "S.N.A.G. She Needs A Gentleman. Fill the need." I'm encouraging boys to be nice! And not rude to their girlfriends. Also, I'm giving them very useful advice. If you're a gentleman, you're much more likely to  get a girlfriend. Trust me. I'm a girl.

Please Don't Feed the Animals

Welcome to the Big House. It's big and it's red. Go figure. It looks pretty charming and picteresque on the outside, but come in and please heed the warning: Don't feed the animals. And we mean the ones on two feet. They don't bite like the other ones but, dang, can they drive a girl crazy. Through crazy flute solos, chipmunk escapades, half-storms, pet hairballs, and other happenings of the Midwest, I manage to keep my wit about me and enjoy it, like a true cheesehead. And you thought the British were resilient. I may carry on, but keeping calm is overrated.

Now, don't take my sister too seriously. We really aren't that nuts. Of course we do have our moments, but I think most families are just boring. Besides we have  great fun here, like the loose chipmunk, and there is always great music, whether we are listening to our favorite artists or making the music ourselves. Both my sister and I have a passion for oldies, some of our favorites being Billy Joel, Don McLean, Journey, Genesis, Bon Jovi, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, just to name a few. Rosalinda plays alto sax and I play oboe, flute, and piano (yes we are qualified band geeks, the band room is the best place in the world) . We are also bona fide Anglophiles. Living in the Midwest is actually brilliant, and living in the country in the Midwest is even better. Adventures abound on Hickory Hill, and here they will be recorded. Enjoy!

P.S - My posts will always be in this font, and my sister's writing is infinitely better than mine, so you will always be able to tell the difference.

My sister is a lovely writer, flautist, pianist and many other things, don't let her tell you otherwise.
